Health Tip Of The Week

Self-tanners: Are they safe?

Self-tanners give your skin that sun-kissed look without exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. And they're generally considered safe. The active ingredient in most gels and creams is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a color additive approved by the Food and Drug Administration. When applied to your skin, DHA reacts with dead cells in the outermost layer of skin to temporarily darken your skin's appearance. Just remember: Most self-tanners don't contain sunscreen. If you'll be in the sun, use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.
