Welcome to the 300th issue of the FreePint Newsletter.

A lot has changed within the FreePint Family since
Issue No. 1, published 6 November 1997. And yet much remains the same. That first issue featured two articles: 'Back to Searching Basics,' and 'Major Sources of Business Information on the Internet'. Neither topic would be out of place in Issue No. 301. For more blasts from the past, check out the FreePint Newsletter archive.

Issue 300!It's also gratifying to see that a number of the early advertisers remain important partners: Dow Jones, Financial Times and TFPL were among the advertisers in that first issue, and you'll see their support across our sites and resources today.

Changes abound, however, and several Issue 300 Special Offers can help you learn more about them:

In a base 10 number system, zeroes are significant. We tend to make time for the 10th (or 20th or 30th) reunion but couldn't care less about the 6th or the 12th. The 50th anniversary is golden. The census comes around every 10 years. These multiples of 10 define the period in which we pause to reflect. Our 300th issue gives us a chance to thank you for your readership over the years.

 My Favourite Tipples

I'm passionate about the evolving business of publishing. This means being a voracious reader (customer!); following technology developments; and staying focused on how people find, buy, consume, and recommend what they read. Today's publishing world is facing disruption on multiple simultaneous fronts. The sites below give me a good overview of how industry players are trying to address all the upheaval.

  • PaidContent.org keeps me posted on who's doing what in the content world. They cover the gamut from newspapers, to electronic books, to magazines, so it's a great one-stop shop for the business side of the publishing world.

  • Wired.com appeals to me as the interface point at which the tech world first reaches general consumption, particularly from the standpoint of cultural change. This is where I go to find out what non-geeks will be learning about technology.

  • I was born too late for social media to be the native way I communicate. So I follow Mashable. This site is a constant stream of new tips, tools, lessons, etc.

  • BusinessInsider.com is a great site for the intersection of technology and money. I'm particularly fond of their Chart of the Day feature.

  • Too many companies (evidently) overlook that their website should cause visitors to do something - whether it's click a button, buy a product, or register an email address. The designers-cum-analysts at Site Tuners are the gurus here. They've got design expertise coupled with technology that can dramatically increase the amount of conversion activity on your site.

Aaric Eisenstein is an experienced analyst and operator of early- and growth-stage companies, with a particular focus on growing companies' profits. He's been involved in software development, online publishing, food manufacturing, and developed a horseracing track.

Most recently Aaric was Senior Vice President - Publishing and Chief Innovation Officer for STRATFOR.com, the online world news and analysis publication. He focused on marketing and sales techniques as well as product evolution that more than doubled the company's paid subscriber base. He earned his BA from Williams College in Political Economy and an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin.

    Resource of the Week - The Twitter Archives from the Library of Congress & Google: The Facts As We Know Them. This has been one busy week. The stream of news and new resources never - and we mean never - slowed down. But as it turns out, one story stands above the rest this week - the new Twitter archives and, to be more specific, the announcement that the Library of Congress would be getting a copy. A few hours before LC began to get the word out (via a tweet, appropriately), Google announced they were already online with a searchable version of the Twitter archive. As of today, the Google's Twitter archive only goes back a few months to February 2010 but 'eventually' the entire archive back to day one will be available and searchable.

Coalition calling: focusing the research efforts in the LIS industry

The LIS Research Coalition was founded about a year ago and is bringing badly needed co-ordination to LIS research in the UK. Their role in facilitating a strategic approach, developing the research capacity and generally being a central focus for LIS research will play an important role in future research.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'The LIS Research Coalition will be communicating its message outwards, but it is also looking for a communication stream inwards towards the Coalition. There is a need for intelligence from the LIS industry and its professionals - suggestions for content, news of research and help with building the evidence base.'

I was an avid student of the Cold War and Russian politics. From my first day at PS 61 in Manhattan when I noticed the yellow-triangle fallout shelter sign, to my days as a political science student at Penn State, I was taught the principles and politics of the Cold War and the need for a strong nuclear arsenal in the face of the all powerful Soviet Bloc. Hawkish professors, remnants of the Nixon administration, guided me toward a keen understanding of the politburo and taught me to embrace Ronald Reagan's vision of the much-vaunted 'Star Wars' defence system. When the walls began to crumble and the Cold War slowly slipped into history, I felt a little lost.

As the dust of the Cold War settled, I found my interest turning to BRIC, where the emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China looked promising as key players in the 21st century. After many years of economic growth, Russia's allure as a destination for multinationals has begun to dim. The lingering economic crisis is inhibiting the country's desirability as a destination; for businesses that do choose to engage in Russia, the macroeconomic volatility underscores the critical need for high-quality information. In this issue of VIP, Jonathon Gordon-Till takes us through two databases: Ruslana from Bureau van Dijk, and EMIS - Russia from ISI Emerging Markets. His conclusion is that while each has its pluses, limited information about named directors, shareholders or advisors is a significant weakness for both.

Speaking of history, it warms my heart to see this month's review of Mergent Online. Mergent is a name that brings back fond memories of the former Moody's company manuals, a mainstay of my early business research career. If I had not learned about them in my Business Information Sources class during my last semester at Drexel University, I would have been lost in my trial-by-fire introduction to company research at the start of my career at PwC. With a major upgrade, the new Mergent Online product is now deemed 'industrial strength' by reviewer John McGovern. It is interesting to note that only 20% of Mergent's existing customers are from the corporate market, although that is one of the audiences Mergent is targeting with the upgrade. Based on the review, I may become a customer again.
